What mid-range DSLR should i get?

i was thinking of either the Canon EOS 500D / Digital Rebel T1i / EOS Kiss X3 KIT 18-55 IS or the Nikon D90 with the 18-55 VR lens..
I'm trying to stick to mainly Nikon and Canon, though i guess I could try something else if you suggest it. I'm looking for something around 1000 dollars (or less).
Any suggestions? Are the models I picked any good?

Then go to a real camera store, not to Best Buy or Wal Mart, and handle the different cameras, and get a feel for them. Try them with different lenses and ask the sales person any questions which occur to you at the time. Buy the one which feels most comfortable in your hands.
